Job Description


Reporting to the CIO, the Director, Application Development will provide technical leadership, vision, direction and mentoring for multiple software development teams, both internal and external. This role will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of development across the enterprise as respects to mission-critical software applications. The Director, Application Development will manage the scheduling and delivery of system enhancements, defect resolution and new product development. Additionally, this role will be responsible for overseeing escalated, code-related support issues. Working closely with the Business Analysis, QA and Project Management teams, along with senior business sponsors, this essential role will be expected to formalize a consistent approach to application development.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Delivers high quality code into Production on time and on budget
  • Works with internal stakeholders to refine business requirements ensuring that coding matches specifications
  • Ensures optimal code is used to deliver against technical specifications ensuring high performing applications ensuring scalability and integration capabilities
  • In a collaborative environment, ability to work with vendor-developed applications 
  • Implements a formalized design, code and query review process with a focus on continual application performance improvement
  • Develop and implement processes for code management ensuring all required documentation is in place, establishing a code check-in/check-out process, etc.
  • In a fast-paced environment, manage multiple development projects providing deliverables across the enterprise with an ability to provide high quality output for both strategic and tactical projects
  • Oversight and management of departmental budget as well as working with Project Management to establish and maintain project budgets and resource allocations
  • As a leader in the IT/OPS organization, participate in defining the future state project roadmap inclusive of strategic application selection process

 

REQUIRED SKILLS
  • 1zero+ years of insurance industry (property & casualty) required with progressive levels of responsibilities in an application development capacity
  • Strong people management skills to interact with all levels of the organization
  • Ability to drive a culture of quality and personal accountability through development and delivery teams
  • Expertise in several technical disciplines to provide guidance and oversight to team members across a variety of underlying technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to manage direct and indirect reports across a broad geography and both internal and external resources
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Expert in Agile and SCRUM methodologies
  • Experience in application architecture and design to participate in strategic build versus buy decision making
  • Deep technical knowledge of web applications, APIs, web services, micro-services, XML, etc.

REQUIRED SKILLS

SQL, PLSQL, Oracle, J2EE, Java EE, jQuery, JIRA, VB, VBA, Python, PHP, Document Management Repositories, Underwriting and Claims platforms, system integration, data migration, etc. Expertise in MS Office required.
